Discover Asian Whisky: Japan, Korea & China Explained
Share
Most people think Scotland when they think whisky. But Asia is making some great drops too, and they're now available in Australia. Here's a quick guide.
Japan: Matsui & Kurayoshi
Matsui has been making whisky in Tottori since 1910. The distillery sits below Mt. Daisen, with clean mountain water and big temperature swings that help the whisky age.
Try: Mizunara Cask (soft and spicy), Sakura Cask (light and fragrant), The Peated (smoky), or the Daisen Mizunara Highball for an easy drink.
South Korea: Ki One Whisky Distillery
Ki One is a pioneer of Korean single malt, founded in 2020. It uses 100% malted barley and copper pot stills, and Korea's four seasons shape the flavour.
Try: Tiger, Eagle or Unicorn single malts, or Batch 7 Cask Strength for something bolder.
China: Laizhou Distillery
Laizhou started in 2016 in Sichuan and is China's top whisky distillery by scale and production capacity. It ages in bourbon, sherry and local Chinese casks.
Try: Peated Bourbon Cask (smoky), STR Red Wine Cask (fruity), or a Sherry Cask (rich and sweet).
How to Pick One
- Like smoky? Go for a peated bottle.
- Like sweet and rich? Go for a sherry cask.
- Want something easy? Try a highball with soda and ice.
- Not sure? Ask the staff at your local bottle shop.
Asian whisky has plenty of character. Try a few, see what you like, and enjoy it. Cheers!
